Submitting raw sports cards for grading can yield massive returns, but sending in sub-par cards can waste time and money. Pre-screening your raw cards before sending them to grading companies like PSA, BGS, or SGC helps maximize high-tier grades (9s and 10s).
1. Check Centering First
Centering is the easiest flaw to spot with the naked eye or a quick-centering tool. Examine both the front and back borders of the card. Most grading companies allow up to 60/40 centering on the front for a Gem Mint 10, but aim for visual symmetry.
2. Inspect the Four Corners Under Light
Micro-dings or minor whitening on corners heavily impact card grades. Use a micro-magnifier (loupe) and direct LED light to inspect all four corners from both sides.
3. Examine the Edges
Chipping along dark borders—especially on chrome or borderless foil stock—is common. Lightly run your eyes along every edge to catch rough cuts, flaking, or fraying.
4. Clear the Surface of Dust and Print Lines
Fingerprints, wax residue, and hairline scratches on surface chrome cards can easily drop a grade. Wipe down cards gently with a clean microfiber cloth before slabbing them or placing them in top loaders.
